Honors Physics

This course consists of 14 units that target topics in Mechanics, Static and Current Electricity, Wave Mechanics, and Ray Optics. There is a wide collection of task Tracker assignments, including Simulations with Concept Checkers, Concept Builders, Minds On Physics missions, customized CalcPad problem sets, and Science Reasoning activities.

The course is well-suited for the junior or senior Physics student with strong math, reading, and thinking skills. Some schools may refer to such students as honors levelgifted, or accelerated. These would certainly be college-bound students. Compared to our on-level course, the Honors Physics course may spend less time on the basics of a concept like acceleration in order to spend extended time making applications of the concept. Compared to our on-level course, the array of problems in the Honors Physics course tend to include more multi-step problems and problems having small nuances. Often times, the solutions to such problems are not immediately obvious and require considerable thought and outside-of-the-box thinking before progress is made. The activities and labs selected for the Honors Physics course tend to be more difficulty than those selected for our on-level course. Compared to our on-level course, this Honors Physics course is designed for the student who takes pleasure in conceptual, mathematical, and laboratory challenges and has the patience and persistance to work through such challenges when progress is slow.

The Honors Physics course is a strong College-Prep course. In fact, successful completion of this course would place students in a position to be very successful in their freshman Physics courses at most universities. We do not recommend our Honors Physics course as an AP Physics C course; it is not algebra-based and the rigor is not sufficient for AP Physics C (Mechanics). With some modifications and topic substitutions, it could be used for AP Physics 1. We do not recommend this as a Physics First course. With some modifications, our on-level course is the more appropriate course for honors-level 9th graders and our Conceptual Physics course is the more appropriate course for on-level 9th graders.

Experiments, Variables, and Relationships

A 6-day unit that acquaints students with the importance of experiments, the use of claim-evidence-reasoning arguments, the concept of variables, the types of variable relationships commonly encountered in a Physics class, and the use of the slope-intercept equation for linear relationships. Relies on several labs and 4 Concept Builders.

1-Dimensional Kinematics

A 16-day unit that forms the foundation for the study of mechanics. Students learn how to describe motion with words, diagrams, graphs, numbers, and equations. Includes several labs, 11 Concept Builders, 13 Minds On Physics missions, 8 CalcPad problem sets, and 6 Physics Interactive simulations.

Newton's Laws of Motion

A 13-day unit that provides a strong emphasis upon the relationship between force and motion. Students learn Newton's three laws, types of forces, how to draw a free-body diagram, how to solve an Fnet =m•a problem, and two-body problems. Includes several labs, 9 Concept Builders, 7 Minds On Physics missions, 8 CalcPad problem sets, and 4 Physics Interactive simulations.

Vectors and Projectiles

A 13-day unit that establishes a foundational understanding of vector principles associated with direction conventions, head-to-tail addition diagrams, right-angle vector additions, use of SOH CAH TOA to determine a direction, vector components, and component addition. Projectile motion concepts and mathematics are introduced and used. Includes several labs, 7 Concept Builders, 7 Minds On Physics missions, 8 CalcPad problem sets, 5 Physics Interactive simulations, 3 Concept Checkers, and 1 Science Reasoning Center activity.

Forces in Two Dimensions

A 9-day unit in which students apply principles they learned in the Newton's Laws and Vectors units in order to analyze a variety of situations involving forces that act at angles to the horizontal and vertical. Includes several labs, 3 Concept Builders, 3 Minds On Physics missions, 4 CalcPad problem sets, and 2 Physics Interactive simulations.

Momentum and Collisions

A 13-day unit that describes the momentum concept and its use in the analysis of explosions and collisions. The impulse-momentum change theorem and the law of conservation of momentum are the two big ideas presented in the unit. Perfectly elastic collisions, two-dimensional collision analysis, and a blending of collision analysis with a post-collision analysis gives the unit a strong honors level edge. Includes several labs, 7 Concept Builders, 4 Minds On Physics missions, 7 CalcPad problem sets, and 6 Physics Interactive simulations with 4 accompanying Concept Checkers.

Circular and Satellite Motion

A 12-day unit that explores the application of Newton's Laws to the motion in horizontal and vertical circles and the motion of orbiting satellites. Static Electricity

A 14-day unit in which students learn how objects become charged and the effect of that charges on other objects in the surrounding region. A 14-day unit that explores what causes charge to flow in circuits and what affects the rate at which it flows. There is an emphasis on series and parallel circuit concepts and mathematics. A 17-day unit that begins with the idea of vibrating object, transitions to a discussion of wave motion and all that it entails, and then applies wave principles to an understanding of sound waves and music. Refraction and Lenses

A 12-day unit that investigates the refraction of light at a boundary between two transparent materials, total internal reflection and the critical angle, and the refraction of light and formation of images by converging and diverging lenses.
