Lesson 1: The Nature of a Sound Wave

Lesson 1 discusses the nature of a sound wave as a mechanical, longitudinal and pressure wave. As of this writing, there are very few photos on this topic in the group's pool. The Physics Classroom encourages students and teachers to combine their cameras and creative juices in an effort to contribute to the pool. Current items in the group's pool include the following two videos which coordinate with Lesson 1 of the Sound Waves and Music chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.

Lesson 2: Sound Properties and Their Perception

Lesson 2 properties of sound such as frequency (and pitch), intensity (and the deciBel scale), and the speed of sound; the mechanism by which the ear perceives sound is also discussed. Items in the group's pool include mainly diagrams and sketches of the ear. Items complement many of the discussions from Lesson 2 of the Sound Waves and Music chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.

Lesson 3: Behavior of Sound Waves

Lesson 3 discusses behavior of sound waves such as the Doppler effect, sound reflection, refraction, diffraction and interference. Items in the group's pool include photos of supersonic aircraft, anechoic chambers, demonstrations performed on wave machines, and much more. Photos complement many of the discussions from Lesson 3 of the Sound Waves and Music chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.

Lesson 4: Resonance and Standing Waves

Lesson 4 discusses the concept of natural frequency and forced vibration and uses the concept to explain how standing wave patterns are established within various media. Items in the group's pool include photos of Chladni patterns, vibrating guitar strings and water goblets, standing wave machines, standing wave patterns on vibrating springs, organ pipes, and much more. Photos complement many of the discussions from Lesson 4 of the Sound Waves and Music chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.

Lesson 5: Musical Instruments

Lesson 5 discusses the concept of resonance and applies the concept to the analysis of musical instruments that involve the vibration of strings and air inside a column. Items in the group's pool include photos of guitar strings, glass harmonic players, Chaldni plates and Chladni patterns, piano strings, pipe organs, and much more. Photos complement many of the discussions from Lesson 5 of the Sound Waves and Music chapter of The Physics Classroom Tutorial.
