Definition of Nodes and Antinodes:
A standing wave pattern consists of nodes and antinodes whose locations along the medium are not changing. A node is a location along the medium which does not undergo any displacement; it is a place of no displacement or a node. An antinode is a location along the medium which undergoes a maximum upward and downward displacement from the rest position.


 
When counting the total number of nodes and antinodes, you will have to be careful you do not fall prey to two common pitfalls. First, be sure to count the two ends of the medium in your count of nodes. And second, be sure you do not count the antinodal positions twice - once for it being up and once again for it being down.


 
The diagram shows the pattern made by the medium at two instants in time during a complete wave cycle. This is a very common way of representing a wave pattern. The pattern is drawn when the antinodal positions are at their maximum displacement from the resting position. And the mirror image is drawn to represent the pattern formed one-half period later when the antinodal positions have reached a maximum displacement in the opposite direction.
