Circular and Satellite Motion - Mission CG2 Detailed Help

Consider the general motion of any object. The acceleration of the object is ____ as the direction of the velocity of the object; and the acceleration is ____ as the direction of the net force acting upon the object. List the two letters in their respective order.

Direction of Velocity:
Velocity is a vector quantity that has a direction. The direction of the velocity vector is always in the direction that the object is moving.

Direction of Acceleration:
Acceleration is a vector quantity and it has a direction. For an object moving in a straight line, the direction of the acceleration is dependent upon two factors:
  • the direction that the object moves, and
  • whether the object is speeding up or slowing down
If an object is speeding up, then the direction of the acceleration is in the same direction that an object is moving. If an object is slowing down, then the direction of its acceleration is opposite the direction that the object is moving.

The motion being described in this question is a general motion. The question is not specific to circular motion. Use the information in the Know the Law sections to answer it.
