Concept Checker for the Mass on a Spring Simulation

Our Concept Checker for the Mass on a Spring Motion Simulation consists of 25 questions organized into 8 Question Groups. Students must correctly answer one question from each Question Group to earn the Trophy for this Concept Checker.

Like all our Concept Checkers, it is designed to be used as a follow-up to an activity - the Mass on a Spring simulation.

The Mass on a Spring simulation is accompanied by a classroom-ready exercise titled Simple Harmonic Motion. It is the second of two student activities for this simulation.  We recommend the use of the exercise with the simulation, followed by the use of this Concept Checker.

The Concept Checker targets student understanding of the following learning outcomes:
  • The student should be able to identify the effect of damping on a spring's motion and the effect of mass on the spring's stretch length at equilibrium.
  • The student should be able to match the position of the mass in its up-and-down cycle to a point on the velocity-time graph.
  • The student be able to match the position of the mass in its up-and-down cycle to the corresponding energy bar chart.
