Balanced vs. Unbalanced Torques

The Balanced vs. Unbalanced Torques Concept Builder presents students with the challenge of deciding if the individual torques experienced by a beam balance and whether the combined effect of all the torques will result in an angular acceleration of the beam. The Concept Builder includes 48 questions organized into 12 Question Groups and carefully scaffolded into three distinct difficulty levels. In the first difficulty level, Apprentice Difficulty Level, learners are provided two torque values and the location where the force is applied along the beam. In the second difficulty level, Master Difficulty Level, learners are provided two force values and the location along the beam where the force is applied; vertical hash marks can be used to measure the distance from the point of application of the force to the fulcrum. In the third difficulty level, Wizard Difficulty Level, learners are provided three or four force values and the location along the beam where the force is applied; vertical hash marks can be used to measure the distance from the point of application of the force to the fulcrum. . Question-specific help is provided for each of the 12 situations. Use of this Concept Builder with our Task Tracker system allows teachers to track student progress.
