Classification of Matter

The Classification of Matter Concept Builder targets students' ability to classify a sample of matter as a pure substance or as a mixture, as a compound or as an element, and as a homogeneous mixture or a heterogeneous mixture. There are four activities in the Concept Builder. In the first activity - Class Matters - students identify the defining characteristics of homogeneous mixtures, heterogenous mixtures, elements, and compounds. In the second activity - Photo ID - students must identify the class of matter depicted by a photograph. In the third activity - Formula for Class - students inspect a simply chemical formula and identify whether it represents a mixture or a pure substance and whether the components are elements or compounds or both. And in the fourth activity - Particle Diagrams - students inspect a particle diagram and idenitfy the proper description of it. There are a total of 25 questions in this Concept Builder, organized into 11 different Question Groups and spread across the four activities. Question-specific help is provided for each of the 11 Question Groups.
